Adoption Process

AMA spays and neuters all pets prior to the adoption.

AMA provides an adoption care package a signature AMA bracelet, pen, magnet and pet bandana, plus dog treats and a toy. We also include educational literature to help you give your pet the best care possible.

Our home inspectors are not looking for the perfect home, they are simply there to determine if the family will give this pet a safe, loving and comfortable forever home. They will look for items that could be potentially hazardous for a pet: nearby poisonous plants, sewing kits, easily accessible trash can(s), cleaning or other chemicals in easy reach, electrical cords laying out and about, or little knick knacks that a dog could choke on. They want to meet everybody living in the home, and to see where the pet would sleep or hang out during the daytime. If there is a yard, they will check if it’s fenced (not required, but a plus) and if it’s high enough and in good repair. They’ll also note what kind of plants are in the yard. If the home inspector does identify concerns, they’ll notify potential adopters and ask if they are receptive to suggestions for fixing any issues.

You’ll need proof of your current address, and up-to-date ID, permission from your landlord (if applicable) and 2 references from your friends, co-workers, vet.

Post-Adoption

Please don’t panic. Accidents happen and it’s not a reason to give up on your four-legged friend. We strongly recommend reaching out to us to discuss the situation. We can help you determine why your pet might have bitten the person and recommend pet trainers and behaviorists who can help. If your dog got bitten as well, take him to see the vet as soon as possible to avoid any medical complications as the wound (even a tiny one) can get infected.

After the official adoption, adopters are financially responsible for all medical or other bills.

During the adoption, an adopter signs a legal agreement to surrender the pet back to AMA Animal Rescue if they are no longer able to care for it.

Fees

AMA charges an adoption fee so that we can keep saving the lives of precious animals. Unlike pet stores, we are not operating for profit, and the adoption fee helps to fund quality care for every animal we take in.

The adoption fee covers all standard vaccinations, including: rabies, distemper (dogs), FVRCP(cats) standard shots, bordetella (dogs), and blood and fecal work. It also covers spay/neuter procedures, a microchip, and–for pets eight years old and above–an open blood work .
